The malevolent half of a person’s soul; it often takes the form of sea creatures such as sharks and becomes a conscious, vengeful monster.

The word adaro comes from the Arosi language and can mean “corpse,” “ghost,” “soul,” or “spirit.” Its existence is inseparable from the Makira people’s belief in the dual nature of the human soul, which holds that every person possesses two kinds of spirits:

Aunga: The positive, benevolent part of the spirit that, after death, successfully leaves the world of the living and journeys to the realm of the ancestors.

Adaro: The malicious, wrathful, vengeful part. This hostile substance remains in the world of the living as a spiteful ghost or spirit, intent on harming living relatives or anyone else it encounters.

It’s worth noting that the dark half of the soul is not as simple as it first appears. The hostile spirit undergoes a transformation and can turn into a physical monster. After that change, Adaro’s appearance is a terrifying blend of human form and marine adaptation, underscoring its role as a predator. The creature is described as a fish-man. Its physiology shows highly specialized oceanic traits: gills behind the ears, and a powerful tail fin where human feet should be. Although its head is mostly human, the teeth are those of a shark—an unmistakable sign of its predatory nature. Some accounts also mention a horn that resembles a shark’s dorsal fin.

But Adaro shouldn’t be viewed only as a savage, mindless threat. Some sources insist that Adaro retains human intelligence; it is a rational being with a full consciousness and personality—though one warped by pure malice.

Legend offers a fascinating detail: because Adaro remains tied to the spirit world even after transforming, elder shamans can exploit that link. Through ritual, a shaman may command the monster, using Adaro to kill or maim people from a distance. After specific rites, Adaro can temporarily become the shaman’s familiar. One shudders to imagine the purposes to which such a weapon was put, but it was undeniably effective.
