Agaliarept

One of Hell’s most prominent demons, bound to occult literature and infernal intelligence.
Type: Devil Habitat: Hell Region: Infernal courts, Memphis legend

Lore

Agaliarept, one of Hell’s most prominent demons, is inextricably bound to the blossoming of occult literature in the 18th and 19th centuries.

According to those texts, Agaliarept is no mere demon but one of six high officers directly beneath Lucifer and his prime minister, Lucifuge Rofocale. His first written appearances coincide with the rise of modern state bureaucracies and intelligence services, a link reflected in his role: he embodies infernal bureaucracy and investigative oversight. The Grimorium Verum claims he is one of Lucifer’s two chief aides, sharing authority with Satanachia.

An intriguing detail is his tie to Memphis and the legendary Egyptian Alibeck, who is credited with publishing classic works on this demon in 1517. This roots Agaliarept in Near-Eastern traditions of hidden knowledge and casts him as keeper of “sublimated mysteries” inaccessible to mortals and even lesser demons.

That Egyptian connection spawned a fairly well-known legend about the “Green Butterfly.” It tells of a rare, mysterious edition of the grimoire The Key of Solomon—supposedly co-authored by Agaliarept himself. Whether Alibeck helped write it or merely owned the book and drew inspiration from it remains uncertain. What is known is that the title page bears a green butterfly. The volume is said to be a portal into the General-Inquisitor’s archive. Folk belief holds that anyone who begins reading the grimoire gains the long-sought knowledge they crave yet gradually loses every memory; those memories drift away as phantom green butterflies that fly to Agaliarept, becoming his prey. Thus one may gain wisdom but forfeit a part of it forever. Occult sources portray Agaliarept as General-Inquisitor, head of Hell’s Secret Police, and “Devourer of Secrets,” wielding power through total control of information.
