Berith
Lore
To grasp the nature of Duke Berith one must combine linguistics, theology, archaeology, and the history of occult practice, for this entity’s path from a Canaanite deity to the archivist of the Underworld mirrors humanity’s evolving ideas of covenant, truth, and betrayal. The name Berith means “agreement” or “alliance,” pointing both to the sacredness of a pact and to forced enslavement through legal finesse.
Classical demonology portrays Berith as a majestic soldier or knight in human form, highlighting his disciplined nature and lofty military rank. He is clad in red armor and garments; here, red is an iconic symbol of war, blood, and infernal fury. A massive golden crown rises on his head, declaring his status as Grand Duke, and his mount—a gigantic red horse—can “incinerate those who lack manners.” The image echoes the biblical Rider of War, cementing Berith’s standing as a lord of destruction.
Beneath his armor he hides horns, claws, fangs, and a tail; his eyes gleam with white or fiery light devoid of pupils, striking mystical terror into all who meet him. His weapons range from spear and sword to trident; his breath releases flames or poisonous vapors.
Historically, Berith was the supreme god of the city of Shechem, today’s Nablus. To its ancient inhabitants he sanctified alliances, oaths, and trade contracts, and excavations at Tel Balata uncovered the ruins of a temple-fortress that served as both sanctuary and treasury; the Shechemites wore miniature statues of the god and kissed them in devotion. Demonization of the cult began in the period of the Judges of Israel: the Israelites saw Berith worship as spiritual treason against Yahweh, and the money Abimelech took from his temple to hire killers sealed Berith’s reputation as a patron of treachery. In demonology Berith belonged to the order of cherubim before the Great Fall and, driven by his passion for battle, sided with Lucifer; retaining his sense of organization, he became Hell’s chief secretary, archivist, and minister of foreign affairs after the defeat. On Earth he appears wherever important yet immoral deals are struck—in political backrooms, at diplomatic talks, and in alchemical laboratories.
