Choronzon
Lore
Choronzon, also known as “the Demon of Dispersion” and “the Dweller of the Abyss.” The entity’s name first appeared in the 16th century as “Coronzom,” later evolving into “Choronzon,” and its numerical index is 333. The number 333 is critical, being one half of the “Number of the Beast” (666), symbolizing imperfection, division, and the fragmentation of consciousness. Choronzon is defined as the temporary personification of incoherent, chaotic, and contradictory forces.
Choronzon lacks a fixed biological form, because its very nature is dispersion. When called to the material or astral plane it assumes shapes that reflect the fears and inner chaos of the Warlock who summoned it. In every guise the demon will scream “I am I!”—its hallmark is an obsessive need to prove its own reality.
This is “rational, egoistic dispersion” that mimics objectivity but is, in truth, absolute madness. Its nature is repugnant even to itself; it loathes focus, silence, and resolve, for those qualities destroy its foundation—chaos. The absence of a coherent personality gives rise to a kaleidoscope of evil intent, sadism, and arrogance. The demon revels in wrecked destinies; it ranks humans among animals driven by instinct and harbors a warped sense of justice where entropy and the decay of order are natural acts.
In chaos-magick, Choronzon’s nature is seen as the possessed side of a false quest, through which the warlock meets a reflection of his own delusions.
