Type: Medium monstrosity, chaotic evil Habitat: Underground caves, especially those of witches Region: Chile

Lore

Invunche is a unique figure from Chilean legend, an artificially created guardian-monster that blends the traits of a vampire with those of a gargoyle. The myth took shape between the 17th and 19th centuries among the Mapuche-Williche people. The name itself comes from the Mapudungun word ifunche, meaning freak or deformed person, underscoring the creature's defining trait: it is not born naturally but is meticulously made by a witch or warlock through dark surgery and occult ritual.

The creation begins when a witch kidnaps or purchases a first-born boy, no older than nine days. Once carried to a hidden cave, the witch begins the horrific process of rebuilding the child. She breaks his legs and twists them behind his back, followed by his arms and feet, which are dislocated and set at impossible angles. In the most gruesome part of the rite, a hole is cut under the right shoulder blade, and the child's right arm is threaded through it so that it appears to grow directly from his back.

As the mutilation sets, the witch applies a magic salve that causes thick, coarse fur to sprout over the entire body. The tongue is split down the middle like a snake's, robbing the being of articulate speech and leaving it with only guttural hisses. The transformation is completed with a strict diet of raw meat, blood, and infusions of poisonous herbs. By adolescence, the Invunche's frame has hardened into a powerful, twisted mass of muscle and bone capable of explosive, predatory leaps despite its deformities.

An Invunche's sole purpose is to serve as a tireless sentinel for a coven's headquarters, typically a network of tunnels hidden beneath an underwater entrance. They are fiercely territorial, fueled by fat-fed torches and the damp stench of the deep earth. Because of their physical state, they cannot swim and are unable to leave the cave without magical assistance. They represent a permanent, living anchor for a witch's power, acting as a warning that some boundaries are protected by more than just locks and spells.
