LEANHAUM-SHEE
Lore
Leanhaum-Shee is a prominent figure in Celtic folklore, known as the lover-fairy. Her name derives from the Gaelic leannan (beloved) and sidhe (people of the hills). While she is called the Leanan Sidhe in Ireland and Scotland, on the Isle of Man, she is often viewed as a solitary fairy who specializes in forging an individual, emotionally intimate bond with a human. Despite her romantic title, she is a predatory entity that requires a constant supply of human life-force to maintain her physical form and supernatural beauty.
Outwardly, Leanhaum-Shee appears as a breathtakingly attractive young woman with pale skin, amber eyes, and flowing red hair, a traditional Celtic marker of otherworldly beings. However, this image is an illusion sustained by the very blood she harvests. She possesses the gift of selective visibility: only the man she has chosen can see or hear her, causing him to appear insane to onlookers as he speaks to empty air. She can also assume the form of a white stag, acting as a traditional guide to the Otherworld while she stalks her prey.
Her vampirism operates on both a metaphysical and physical level. During intimacy, she silently drains the life energy of her lover, leading to symptoms of progressive wasting: pallor, night sweats, and a deep, spiritual exhaustion. Physically, she is a blood-drinker who collects the fluid in a magical red cauldron. This vessel preserves her youth and acts as the source of a narcotic elixir. She sometimes feeds her victim small doses of his own blood, which grants him the brief, explosive bursts of inspiration required to write the sublime poetry she craves.
The relationship with a Leanhaum-Shee is a lethal bargain that inevitably leads to the victim's demise. As the human wastes away, his artistic output grows more brilliant until the spirit has siphoned every drop of vitality. Should the chosen lover attempt to break her enchantment or reject her outright, the spirit's facade of affection vanishes. She is said to strangle the unfaithful lover and drain their remaining blood to the last drop, leaving behind a withered corpse and a legacy of haunted, blood-stained verses.
