Mejenkwad
Lore
Mejenkwad (Spirit) - Marshall Islands - Malicious female spirits that can fly and usually bring death.
Mejenkwad (also Mejenkwaad) is regarded as one of the most dangerous monsters in the folklore of the Marshall Islands, a nation in Micronesia. Marshallese culture, grounded in centuries-old oral tradition, passed on knowledge of the world, navigation, and spiritual dangers exclusively through stories, songs, and myths long before Europeans arrived. Among these legends, Mejenkwad holds a special place.
Mejenkwad is classified not merely as a monster but as a malicious spirit or witch capable of flight. People say her appearance heralds death; if someone happens to spot her, it means another person has just died.
Most often she is described as a female, ghost-like figure—sometimes a flying silhouette with very long, loose hair. Her eyes glow like embers, and anyone who dares look into them sees flames from the depths of the underworld. The ghostly body is thin and emaciated, but the most terrifying aspect is her ability to disguise—or more accurately, transform—herself into living people. In one tale, after a woman becomes Mejenkwad, she masks herself as another woman and greets the husband returning from work, pretending to be his wife. The creature takes on the form of the person you trust and love most. The horror lies not in horns or claws but in the fact that she is a camouflaged spirit that is hard to detect. According to the legend, only when the husband notices odd behavior can he suspect the monster before him.
As for the spirit’s origin, several versions link Mejenkwad to restless female souls—women who died in childbirth or through violence.
Mejenkwad behaves like a solitary, territorially destructive predator. Her natural habitat is a human settlement (a home), which she methodically cleanses of life. Thanks to her ability to fly, she can then move between islands, posing a threat to other communities and hunting fresh victims. Spirits of the Anjellik class, to which she belongs, often roam between sunset and sunrise, indicating that her activity is largely nocturnal.
This is a cunning, vicious, and ruthless entity. She can plan strategically: she waits until the men have sailed away before devouring the community. She understands human speech, knows people’s names, can mimic voices, and more.
