Melchom
Lore
In various legends, Melchom appears as Hell’s Treasurer, the Keeper of the Purse, the Demon of Greed, and the Duke of Profit.
In his true form he is a large humanoid demon with feline facial features and human-like expressions, glowing blue-gold eyes without pupils, and skin in shades of dark green, mustard yellow, and dull gray, reminiscent of oxidized copper and antique gold. To disguise himself he adopts the look of a genial-seeming merchant. He is clad in garments that at first glance seem modest yet are fabulously expensive, colored dark green and mustard. His attire always brims with hidden luxuries: heavy silver chains, signet rings on every finger, and gold embroidery along the hem of his mantle.
Melchom’s attributes include the Infernal Purse—a spatial anomaly filled with endless gold coins; the Scales of Souls, used to weigh a mortal’s sinfulness and set the market price of their soul when contracts are made; and the Grossbuch—an account book chained to his right hand containing records of every infernal debt.
Originally Melchom was worshiped as Milcom—a solar deity of fertility, statehood, and war among the Ammonites (modern-day Amman); after a conflict with the Israelites his temples were destroyed and he became a demon obsessed with amassing material wealth and human souls. Within the infernal hierarchy he serves as the Treasurer of Hell’s civil service, belongs to the Order of the Fly under Beelzebub, and works in tandem with the Chief Treasurer Astaroth, answering to Mammon. He controls the flow of infernal capital, safeguards and allocates funds, and strictly regulates the soul trade between Hell and the Faerie Realm.
