Metsavaimud
Lore
Metsavaimuds are helpers of the Leshy—the forest spirit—who can also take on the appearance of ordinary people, usually a shepherd boy herding a flock of hares in the woods.
But not everything is perfect with these spirits. Sometimes after transforming, they look like an ordinary person from the front, but from behind, they have the appearance of a rotten tree trunk or they have a tail. They can also appear in the form of animals: a wolf, a bear, or a snake. Yet again, some part of the Metsavaimud will resemble rotten wood—this is a unique characteristic of this spirit.
Metsavaimuds are patrons of birds; you could say birds are their favorite animals, and they will always come to their aid. They also care for other animals that are sick or wounded.
Metsavaimuds are connected with trees, and the growth of trees in the forest depends directly on these spirits. They inhabit tree hollows, where they can live in families. Metsavaimuds are generally not dangerous to people, although they can punish those who violate prohibitions, including disturbing the harmony of the forest. Usually, they take away good luck. For example, a hunter who constantly leaves wounded animals in the forest may be deprived of his luck and go a long time without any game.
