OTAKEMARU
Lore
Otakemaru isn't an ordinary yokai or man-eating oni; he is a demonic demigod. His legend is inseparable from the historical general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who fought in the early ninth century and is said to be the only person ever to destroy this mountain demon. His presence represents a tier of supernatural threat that challenges even the most seasoned heroes of myth.
According to the tales, Otakemaru settled on Mount Suzuka, a key overland corridor that cut through the range. There he ambushed caravans, robbed them, murdered travelers, and abducted women. Being part divine, Otakemaru also stole sacred artifacts from the gods, storing them in his lair. His birth is described as the union of a human and a demon, giving him a humanoid form infused with destructive, semi-divine might.
Otakemaru is depicted as a gigantic, horned oni, yet his signature trait is master-level shapeshifting. Legends show that he relied as much on trickery as brute strength, appearing one moment as a beautiful woman and the next as a pious priest. In these guises, he lured victims to convenient ambush spots or struck travelers when they least expected it. Such transformations point to his ability to bend reality to suit his predatory needs.
Beyond his physical prowess, he could summon storms, lightning, and torrential rain, making him a master of the elements. Some texts claim he possessed specific stolen relics-iron boots, a shield, and a helmet-that granted him near-invulnerability and incredible speed. To face Otakemaru is to face the fury of the mountain itself, a whirlwind of steel, sorcery, and ancient resentment that refuses to be tamed by mortal law.
