Pulgae
Lore
Pulgae (불개) literally means “fire dog.” Pulgae is both the name of a legendary monster and of a rare traditional Korean dog breed that originated around Yeongju in North Gyeongsang Province. Stories say the breed was born from crosses between Sobaek-mountain wolves and farm dogs, giving it a distinctly wild, wolf-like look.
Legends describe Pulgae as a fierce hound with fiery red or reddish-brown fur. Like a wolf, it has a long, lean body, pointed ears, and an untamed appearance. Its fangs are said to jut out even when its mouth is closed.
Pulgae’s most striking trait is its eyes, which change color as it grows. Puppies start with blue eyes; these turn yellow and finally settle into a feral reddish or amber hue. Its coat, skin, claws, and nose all carry a reddish tint, reinforcing its fire nature. Young pups may also have white chest spots that fade with age, much like wolf cubs.
Pulgae is the loyal servant of the king of the Dark Land (까막나라), a realm of eternal night. Hoping to bring light to his kingdom, the Dark King sends his fiery dogs to steal the Sun and the Moon. When a Pulgae tries to swallow the Sun, it is burned and spits it out, causing a solar eclipse. When it tries to swallow the Moon, the Moon’s chill forces it to cough it up, creating a lunar eclipse. The cycle repeats endlessly until the Dark King abandons his quest.
