Rokobakaniceva
Lore
Rokobakaniceva (Octopus Goddess) - Fiji - A deity in the form of an enormous octopus.
Rokobakaniceva, a gigantic octopus deity, holds sway over the oceanic realms. He stands as the eternal guardian of the Naceva Passage off Kadavu’s southern shore, where he maintains the balance between humankind, the sea, and all other ocean-dwelling creatures.
Rokobakaniceva is portrayed as a colossal octopus whose immense size and physical presence inspire awe. The most striking feature is his eyes—described as intelligent and wise, their gaze conveying awareness. This detail underlines his sentience, setting him apart from an ordinary sea monster.
He has eight tentacles of incredible power. They can smash rock or completely immobilize and overcome large marine creatures. One of his most remarkable abilities is the instant color change that lets him camouflage, blending into coral reefs or any surroundings. This adaptability gives his fighting style elements of stealth and suddenness, essential for effectively defending his territory. As physical proof of Rokobakaniceva’s might and his victory over Dakuwaka, the shark-god, folklore says an imprint of the octopus’s strike is still visible on a rock opposite the Naceva Passage.
