TEKETEKE
Lore
Teketeke is a modern urban specter, born in the era when railroads first transformed the Japanese landscape. Her nickname is onomatopoeic-"tek-tek," the sharp, rhythmic clicking sound heard as the spirit scrambles along the ground using only her hands or elbows. Folklore warns that if you ever hear that sound approaching through the dark, it is likely already too late to outrun the malice that accompanies it.
In the most widespread version of the legend, a young woman named Kashima Reiko was involved in a horrific accident on the train tracks. Some say she was beaten by thugs and left for dead, while others claim she fell; regardless, a passing train cut her body in two at the waist. The tragedy was compounded by a brutal winter chill that clamped her blood vessels shut, prolonging her consciousness and agony as she tried to crawl toward safety.
The transformation into an onryo was triggered not just by the violence of her death, but by the indifference of those around her. It is said that passers-by who witnessed her struggle simply turned their heads or hurried away, unwilling to help a dying girl. This cold societal disregard fueled a vengeful rage so potent that her spirit remained bound to the rails, seeking to inflict the same bisection upon any who linger near her domain.
Teketeke is characterized by her supernatural speed and upper-body strength. Despite having no legs, she can outpace a running human or even a speeding car over short distances. She often lurks near footbridges or station platforms, appearing as a normal schoolgirl from behind until she turns to reveal her missing lower half. Her anger is indiscriminate, as she views all who possess whole bodies as symbols of the world that abandoned her in her hour of need.
