Type: undead Habitat: deep forests and sacred woodland cores Region: Witchwood

Lore

In ancient tales, it's said that Zhiburinis was once a guardian of the forest—a being of strength and wisdom. Over time, however, as humans delved deeper into the ancient woodland realm and ceased living in harmony with the forest—massively cutting down trees and hunting animals to extinction—Zhiburinis changed, and his essence became distorted.

Legends don't provide a clear description of his origin, but summing up all the stories, one can conclude that Zhiburinis appeared in times when the boundary between the earthly and the ethereal was at its thinnest. It's believed that this creature emerged from the very essence of the forest itself—a manifestation of the ancient heart of the woods, the last hope for protection and the barrier safeguarding the sacred parts of the forest from humans.

Accounts of encounters with Zhiburinis vary. Some say that seeing this skeleton in the forest is considered a bad omen—that such a meeting can bring a lifetime of misfortune. Others claim it's not just bad luck but a profound change in a person's destiny. According to other tales, a person who sees Zhiburinis may die on the spot from the terror he instills, often due to a heart attack. In such cases, a small flame appears on the victim's body in the area of the heart.

Despite his ominous reputation, Zhiburinis can communicate with nature and is extremely protective of it. For example, he can converse with trees, which can share information he's seeking or tell him what's happening nearby or on the other side of the forest. Since trees communicate among themselves, Zhiburinis understands what's being discussed. He can also ask the trees and other vegetation to help him in times of trouble. But the main task of this spirit is to protect the forest at all costs.

However, even such a mysterious creature as Zhiburinis is not without vulnerabilities. He is bound to the forest and cannot leave its boundaries. His existence is inextricably linked to the health of the environment he inhabits. As trees are cut down or the forest suffers for various reasons, Zhiburinis suffers as well—his glowing appearance dims with each felled tree, with each polluted stream. Thus, the fate of the spirit reflects the fragile balance of the natural world he embodies—a reminder of the interconnectedness of all life.

It's believed that if one treats Zhiburinis without proper respect, he will surely return to avenge the offense—perhaps causing misfortune or seeking retribution. There's a story in which Zhiburinis, in the form of a woman, came at night to someone who had shot at his glowing silhouette the day before. She approached the sleeping person, and the next morning, that individual was found murdered under mysterious circumstances.
