Elders still tell the story that long before the islands of Aotearoa–New Zealand took on their present shape, one momentous event occurred. The legendary navigator Kupe arrived—a man forever remembered as standing on the border between the human world and the great ocean. Generation after generation repeats the tale of how he gave the islands their first names and of the mighty sea beings he met along the way. One of those beings was Araiteuru, a dragon Kupe left behind in a coastal bay, ordering it to guard the island’s sandbar and protect anyone who honors the ocean’s sacred rites.

Since that day, the harbor’s southern headland is more than a cliff—it is the frozen tail of Araiteuru. Beneath it lies a cave where the monster slumbers, hearing every splash above the sandy bar. Let the slightest threat appear and the water turns to white foam, a storm erupts, and in the dark depths moko patterns—traditional tattoos—flare across its serpentine face, proclaiming its ancient age and high rank. One lash of that tail can smash any ship to splinters.

Araiteuru is the guardian dragon of the Te Roroa people, charged with defending its territory. Its destructive power surfaces only when it senses danger, making it shift instantly from watchful protector to vengeful destroyer.

With a single sweep of its tail, Araiteuru can raise a towering wave that floods a vessel. The dragon is not evil by nature; its essence is tied to control, and it will battle and obliterate any ship that disturbs its peace.

Most fearsome of all is Araiteuru’s ability to summon localized, ruinous storms—fierce winds and crashing surf that guarantee the wreck of any ship caught on the bar.
