Boongurunguru

A demon that appears as a gigantic boar with a fern growing on its flat head and a buzzing hornets’ nest beneath its chin.
Type: fiend (demon) Habitat: Waimarai wilderness and sacred grave zones Region: Solomon Islands

Lore

In ancient manuscripts, Boongurunguru is portrayed as a demonic swine that haunts the mana-soaked wilderness of Waimarai. While it undeniably looks like an enormous wild boar, the creature brims with pride and refuses to be spoken of as a mere animal. Legend warns that if a mortal hears Boongurunguru’s grunting and off-handedly mutters, “Must be some wild pigs nearby,” vengeance strikes at once.

One tale centers on Umaroa, chieftain of the Muara clan, who saved his people during the great flood that swept across what is now Waimarai, New Guinea. After the chief’s death, Boongurunguru is said to have risen at his burial site. Many believe the demon is an uncontrolled surge of the ancient, potent magic that guards Umaroa’s sacred grave. The Waimarai tract where he lies is a nexus of raw power, and visitors must follow strict taboos. Any breach triggers arcane punishment: lumberjacks who leave felled trees behind, for instance, will wander the forest forever—until they meet Boongurunguru, and the outcome is grimly predictable.

Legends describe Boongurunguru as a titanic boar whose arrival all but guarantees death. Even if heroes stand and fight, they must face not only the monster’s raw might but the death-curse that trails in its wake.

The demon’s most striking feature is its flattened head, from which a living fern sprouts. The squashed profile hints at a spiritual deformity born of its bond with the magic-saturated land. Ferns are often linked to invisibility and ancient sorcery; here the plant forms a crown, showing that the beast’s power is literally rooted in the forest’s life-force. It may well be the source of its regeneration or a reservoir of mana for its spells. Another trademark is the buzzing hornet nest that hangs perpetually beneath its chin. The swarm lashes out at anyone in close quarters, forcing foes to keep their distance. Because Boongurunguru channels the jungle’s magic, it controls the hornets effortlessly: scrambling up a tree to escape will only bring the stingers on you.
