BAITAL
Lore
The Baital, or Vetal, belongs to a special class of vampiric entities whose nature is defined by its status as a restless spirit trapped between worlds. Its name literally translates to "corpse-dweller," referring to its habit of settling inside a freshly dead body to use it as a physical vessel. While its true astral form appears as a half-human, half-bat hybrid with a short tail and glowing eyes, it is almost always encountered wearing the borrowed, rotting skin of a mortal.
According to legend, a person becomes a Baital if they committed grievous sins or suffered an agonizing, unjust death. To interact with the living, the spirit must inhabit a corpse-a divine punishment that forces the soul to wander in a decaying shell while seeking release. There is no single origin; a Baital might be the spirit of a bandit who robbed too many travelers, or a victim of torture whose sheer agony chained their soul to the earth for revenge.
The reanimated corpse a Baital inhabits is pale and bloodless, requiring regular infusions of fresh blood or life force to keep the host body from disintegrating. Its most potent weapon is its hypnotic gaze; a single moment of eye contact can plunge a victim into a stupor of dizziness and total loss of will. This power is essential for survival, as the borrowed bodies often lack true speed or strength, making the Baital a predator that prefers to isolate and ambush travelers under the cover of night.
Baitals are typically found near cemeteries and abandoned temples, where a steady supply of new "shells" is available once their current host becomes too decayed to function. They are notoriously easy to expose-simply by checking for a heartbeat-but their sharp intellect and knowledge of the past make them dangerous conversationalists. They are known for posing riddles to those who try to capture them, using their supernatural wisdom to trick their captors into making fatal errors of judgment.
