Bukavac
Lore
Bukavac A monster with slimy skin, a huge mouth, a long tail, and massive, twisted deer antlers.
Bukavac is a demonic creature described in legends as a four or six-legged monster covered in slimy skin with a long tail. Additionally, it has huge, highly twisted and curled antlers on its head. Visually, it most closely resembles a bull.
According to folk beliefs, it lives in large bodies of water—most often in lakes or swamps—and its home is considered to be a shelter made of stones that it constructs itself.
During the day, the Bukavac usually lies at the bottom of a lake. It can breathe both underwater and on the surface without limitation. This allows it to ambush livestock that come to the water to drink. Typically, it leaps out of the water with a roar and grabs its prey with its numerous limbs, either strangling it or dragging it underwater. Its roar simply paralyzes the victim with surprise and fear.
It can also appear in forests, fields, and villages. Before emerging from the water, the Bukavac emits a deafening roar that's heard throughout the area. When it comes to a village, it kills livestock and may even destroy structures to get to them. It's fairly easy to recognize that it was a Bukavac, as it always leaves behind the tracks of its six legs. Stopping such a monster is extremely difficult due to its strength and size; it can easily trample its victim—including humans—simply by stomping on them.
There are legends that tell that the Bukavac may possess magical abilities and use them for its own purposes. Here are some of its abilities: It can create dense fog that disorients its victims, giving the Bukavac an advantage. It can create waves and whirlpools in the water, and sometimes it can summon aquatic spirit helpers—usually water demons—to aid in its hunting.
Bukavacs are dangerous, and yet people hunt them nonetheless. Their horns, meat, and hide are valuable.
