Its main task is to store various items—or, to be precise, anything at all. These can be herbs, elixirs, and other necessary ingredients the witch needs. The witch can also entrust Kolovertysh with other items she might require. Kolovertysh stores all these things in his cheeks or in a special pouch in his esophagus designed for keeping everything.

This is very convenient; for example, when the witch goes to gather herbs for her next potion, she always takes Kolovertysh with her. He can carry inside himself various tools or items needed for collecting herbs or other ingredients. The witch simply takes out from his cheek whatever she needs. After the witch finds the necessary ingredient, Kolovertysh is right there, and she gives it to him for safekeeping. This way, she doesn't need to carry anything herself; Kolovertysh always runs alongside her and is happy when he's given something to do.

According to various sources, Kolovertysh can store a great many useful magical ingredients inside himself, so the witch can prepare almost any magical brew in a matter of seconds.

There is also a folktale that explains the origin of Kolovertysh. Once, a witch was wandering through the forest in search of herbs and other ingredients to brew an elixir for her dark plans. At some point, she noticed a dead dog that had been killed by wolves, and next to the dog were tiny puppies. The witch took them to her hut. Seven days later, these puppies turned into Kolovertyshes. What ritual or spell the witch performed, no one knows.

Kolovertysh puppies are worth more than a herd of cows because you can stash anything at all in their cheeks. They also have very sharp teeth; if anyone other than their owner tries to take something from their mouth, they risk losing a hand, as a Kolovertysh can easily bite through one.
