OWENGA
Lore
Owenga, also known as the Ovang, is one of the most unique varieties of West African revenants. Unlike many vampires, this is not a mindless predator driven by a biological thirst, but a sentient corpse that has risen due to a profound emotional wound, specifically, a broken heart. In the moral-social context of Guinea, any disruption of harmony between individuals is seen as a catalyst for such a return, resulting in an intellectual being seeking specific, targeted justice.
The spirit's origin lies in the psycho-emotional state of the dying. When a person leaves life burdened by a crushing sense of betrayal, domestic cruelty, or unrequited love, the soul's normal passage to the realm of the ancestors is blocked. The spirit remains trapped within the body, forming an Owenga. This entity initially remains within the grave for several days or months, meticulously sorting through the memories of its past life to construct a perfect algorithm of vengeance against those who caused its heartbreak.
Once its plan is honed to perfection, the Owenga rises. Its physical form is a stark mirror of its internal trauma: a desiccated, emaciated skeleton wrapped in gray-blue, parchment-like skin. It is typically hairless and possesses a single, perpetually bloodshot eye that burns with focused malice. Despite its frail appearance, its tissues are unusually dense and hardened by spiritual energy, making the revenant remarkably resistant to conventional mechanical damage and weapons.
An Owenga is territorially bound to the path between its grave and the objects of its resentment. It moves with terrifying, absolute silence, its steps produce no sound, and it possesses neither breath nor heartbeat to betray its location. It avoids contact with other supernatural beings, focusing entirely on its mission of retribution. Because it thrives in the zone of silence it creates, travelers are warned to watch for sudden hushes in the forest, which often signal that the skin-clad skeleton is drawing near.
