Pazuzu
Lore
Pazuzu is the demon of the south-west wind, a name that for millennia struck terror into the peoples of the Ancient Near East. The exact meaning of the name is still unknown, though some link it to the idea of a “fierce” or “gusting” wind. In Mesopotamia the south-west wind brought heat and famine during drought, and storms, floods, and locusts in the rainy season, so the demon’s name became associated with climatic disasters, disease—malaria above all—and devastation.
Anatomically, Pazuzu is depicted as a humanoid creature covered in rigid scales the color of dark bronze, iron, or scorched sand. His rectangular head blends a dog’s or lion’s muzzle, bulging glowing eyes, and curving goat horns. Two pairs of eagle wings spring from his back, symbolizing dominion over all winds. His arms end in leonine paws with retractable claws, his legs in the talons of a raptor. From the lower back extends a segmented scorpion tail tipped with poison. The aura surrounding the demon is deliberately repellent and serves as an apotropaic ward against other spirits. In ancient images he usually stands with his right hand raised and his left lowered, interpreted as control over the upper and lower worlds.
In the wild Pazuzu favors extremely harsh, uninhabitable environments. He can be found high in the Zagros Mountains on the modern Iraq-Iran border, where cold, savage storms are born, as well as in the boundless sun-blasted deserts from which he summons the sirocco. In these wastelands he behaves as an absolute territorial alpha predator. Any expedition crossing the desert in the dry season risks incurring his wrath. He tolerates no competition and destroys any other demon that intrudes on his airspace. Despite his solitary nature, he can act as a pack leader for countless swarms of minor wind spirits, which he unleashes on settlements if angered.
The demon possesses high intelligence, a talent for deceit, and vanity, and prefers to operate alone. His disposition is aggressive, arrogant, and sadistic, yet it is kept in check by a cold, calculating mind. In combat Pazuzu moves through the air at storm-wind speed, and on land in powerful leaps. He avoids deep bodies of water, for his element is fire and dry wind. Close quarters fighting relies on his sharp claws, bites, and venomous scorpion tail. At times he employs a fiery breath—super-heated desert air capable of melting metal. Tactical methods include raising sandstorms, blinding foes, destroying cover, and precise diving strikes from above, combined with stabs from his poisonous tail. In critical moments he summons lesser wind spirits to distract his opponents.
