SUIKO
Lore
Suiko (水虎), literally "water tiger," is a term used for the most ferocious of aquatic spirits; sources stress a strict hierarchy in which a suiko commands forty-eight lesser kappa. As an officer in the underwater world, the suiko is markedly more aggressive than its common cousins. It kills to showcase its brutality and amasses trophies in the form of consumed souls, answering only to the water dragon.
Physically, a suiko resembles a child of three or four, yet its body is armored with thick, glistening scales and is completely hairless. Sharp, claw-like protrusions-knee blades-jut from each limb. Crucially, it lacks the head-bowl of water found on typical kappa, removing a key vulnerability and greatly boosting its combat effectiveness on land, making it a relentless hunter in any environment.
A suiko's intellect is keen: it organizes subordinate spirits and mounts coordinated nighttime raids onto land. While it may limit itself to prankish door-pounding, its main drive is climbing the demonic ranks. It chooses victims by social standing, believing the higher the status of the prey, the richer the spiritual reward. This tactical approach to hunting makes it a nightmare for traveling nobility.
The typical attack is a sudden ambush at the water's edge-a powerful grab followed by drowning and the complete drainage of the victim's blood. Once the soul is devoured, the yokai always returns the bloodless body to the surface as a grim testament to its power. Chronicles cite the Iwakigawa basin in Aomori as a common territory, where local shrines are still maintained to appease these lethal "Water Tigers."
