SUNAMURA NO ONRYO
Lore
Sunamura no Onryo, literally "the vengeful spirit of Sunamura," is a rare and terrifying hybrid yokai-a malevolent ghost fused with the physical form of a pumpkin. In the hierarchy of Japanese spirits, an onryo is considered among the most dangerous of yurei, typically born from deep resentment or a powerful curse capable of unleashing epidemics and natural disasters.
This specific entity is tied to the former village of Sunamura, once on the outskirts of Edo and now a part of Tokyo's Koto Ward. The area was historically famous for its plentiful pumpkin fields. While most onryo are the souls of people, the curse in Sunamura latched onto the crops themselves, making this spirit a unique example of vegetative malice and agricultural dread.
The creature's body is composed of a dense tangle of pumpkin vines and withering leaves. In its frail vine-hands, it cradles a heavy, bright-orange pumpkin where a head ought to be. Its plant-like nature allows it to blend perfectly into pumpkin patches, making it most active and dangerous during the autumn harvest season when it can stalk laborers unnoticed.
At night, it drifts toward the village outskirts to stalk the locals. Pursuit is silent, marked only by a sudden rush of cold air and the sickly stench of rotting vegetables. When it strikes, vines coil around the victim to drain their life energy, while its mere presence causes nearby crops to spoil and spreads sudden illness among people and livestock, marking it as a true high-ranking onryo.
