Lore

The Yara-Ma-Yha-Who is a legendary creature from Australian folklore, appearing as a small, roughly four-foot-tall humanoid with vibrant red skin. Its most striking physical feature is its oversized head, which can account for nearly half of its total body mass. Despite its diminutive stature, it is a patient and terrifying predator of the coastal canopies, known for dropping silently from the branches onto unsuspecting travelers who seek shade beneath its home.

Unlike typical vampires of other regions, the Yara-Ma-Yha-Who is entirely toothless. However, its mouth is incredibly elastic, functioning similarly to a snake's jaws and stretching wide enough to swallow an adult human whole. Instead of claws, its fingers and toes end in large, powerful suction pads. It uses these pads to latch onto its prey and drain their blood directly through the skin, causing the victim to grow weak and faint without ever sustaining an open wound.

The spirit's feeding cycle is uniquely horrifying. After draining a victim's vitality, it swallows them whole. Seized by a supernatural thirst, the creature then drinks a massive quantity of water and begins a partial digestion process. Eventually, it vomits the victim back up. The person is returned to the world alive and intact, but they are noticeably shorter than before and possess a permanent reddish tint to their skin, the first stage of a slow transformation into a Yara-Ma-Yha-Who themselves.

This spirit dwells exclusively within the dense, humid crowns of wild fig trees in coastal forests. These trees are revered as sacred vessels of life-force, providing the deep shade and moisture the creature requires to survive. It avoids direct sunlight and often retreats to cool caves during the peak of the afternoon heat. Local tradition suggests that the only way to survive an encounter is to lie perfectly still and play dead, as the creature rarely consumes those who do not struggle against its suction-pad grip.
