Folklore-Driven Plot Hooks & Campaign Ideas

Your party reaches a new city—now what?

If you’re hunting for campaign ideas or quick one-shot ideas that feel local, alive, and steeped in myth, 100 Urban Scenarios delivers exactly what you need. Each page gives you a clean plot hook plus the history behind it—perfect story ideas you can run tonight, twist into a murder mystery, or expand into epic arcs and backstory ideas for NPCs and PCs alike.

When inspiration runs low and you just need a sharp idea, open the book, point to a city scenario, and go.

A Glimpse Inside the City Walls

With 100 unique legends at your fingertips, you'll never run out of material. Drop these scenarios directly into your game:

  • The Cursed Mirror: A terrifying investigation and horror scenario surrounding a looking glass that reveals dark omens.
  • The Wawel Dragon: A tactical combat scenario where heroes must outsmart a fearsome beast demanding terrible tributes.
  • The Piper's Revenge: A heavy moral dilemma involving a mysterious wanderer, unpaid debts, and the sudden disappearance of the city's children.
  • The Smile at Midnight: A tense diplomatic encounter with a masked spirit haunting the quiet quarters of the city.

How It Helps GMs

  • Plug-and-play structure: Each scenario outlines the core problem, consequences, origins/legend, ways to address it, and a crisp resolution—so your 5E campaign ideas turn into sessions fast.
  • Multiple play styles: Hooks emphasize exploration, diplomacy, or combat, so you can easily match tonight’s mood.
  • Story fuel everywhere: Short incantation-like poems, extra adventure hooks, suggested solutions, and authentic folklore tidbits spark instant story and backstory ideas.
  • No level assumptions: Scale the tension and rewards to perfectly fit a one-shot, a quick side quest, or your main campaign.
  • City after city: Make every settlement memorable with local legends, mysteries, curses, and love stories.

Why You’ll Use It Again and Again

  • Save prep time with ready one-shot ideas and session-bridging scenes.
  • Layer intrigue with a street-level murder mystery or a high-stakes political scandal.
  • Turn a single plot hook into a branching storyline your players won’t forget.

First of all, the artwork is beautiful and suits the theme well. I love the page layouts and how everything works together so smoothly. The scenarios are interesting and well thought out. My group is going to really enjoy them! I'd like to add though, that they are strong story plots rather than the whole story. It is up to the DM and their players to find there way from there.

Thank you for this project I am going to use it with my school club as mini adventures.. And tbh probably leverage into Richard Green's Parsantium! What is the best way to suggest new ideas for the plot hooks? (I am coming up with lots of ideas from new zealand, UK, Hong Kong and India)
