Lore

The name Burach-Bhaoi is derived from two Gaelic elements: buarach and bhaoi. The first term traditionally refers to the ropes or wooden hobbles used to secure a cow's hind legs during milking, a grim nod to how the creature binds its victims. The second element, bhaoi, can be translated as "fierce" or "wild," and is frequently linked to ancient concepts of sorcery. Together, these roots highlight the creature's twin hallmarks: its power to physically shackle its prey and its inherently magical, rather than purely biological, nature.

According to accounts from the Highland districts of Perthshire and Argyll, the Burach-Bhaoi appears as a massive, muscular eel. It typically measures between three and six feet in length, possessing skin that is smooth, slimy, and coal-black along its back to merge with the muddy floor of a loch. Its belly is significantly paler, often yellowish or white. On the darkest nights, witnesses have reported seeing faint yellow-green bioluminescent flecks flaring up along its body just before it strikes a target at the shoreline.

The most striking and unsettling feature is the "nine-eye" phenomenon. Folklore insists that eye sockets appear not just on the creature's head but all along its spine, an arrangement unknown in vertebrate anatomy that aligns with the Celtic symbolism of the number nine, often associated with the Otherworld. Several tales also note that the monster's internal fluids have a distinct greenish tint, further separating it from ordinary life. Its dental kit consists of three independent pairs of predatory jaws capable of punching through thick cattle hide and even reinforced leather armor.

As a patient ambush predator, the Burach-Bhaoi lurks in the shallows of deep lakes and murky rivers. It waits for a traveler or animal to approach the water's edge before lashing out with its muscular body, coiling around their legs like the milking shackles of its namesake to drag them into the depths. Once submerged, the victim is held fast as the creature begins its slow, vampiric feeding process. Despite its strength, it shares the common fae vulnerability to iron; a blade of cold iron is the only reliable way to sever its grip once the "shackles" have been applied.
